This artwork is an exploration of the history of cotton in India, and the united states, and how it affects its sustainability today. 2 long woven strips hang heavily on a ring, as they depict the stories of the journey of cotton in India and the United States, with one that signify how they are separate, yet connected
and similar. The 3 thin strips are woven entirely from my own loom waste from working on this project, that goes to speak to the circularity of the material in history. It also criticizes the fast fashion brands for green washing people into believing they are making an ethical choice. Denim tells the story of not only the slaves in cotton plantations in america, and how today, it is a uniform for the working class globally. Kala cotton, an indigenous rain-fed variety of organic cotton from gujarat, india, shows how the history can not only influence and inform us of the decisions we take today, but also proves as an alternate, sustainable alternative for the problems conventional cotton faces today.
by recycling garments, but it is important to know that, no recycled piece is as good as the original and the strips promote slow consumption. At the same time, it criticizes makers for producing waste through their making process as they talk about making ethical decisions. All pieces are handwoven, with most pieces showcasing handwoven kala cotton yarn
